Five Days Before

I’ve been thinking a lot about this project/journey/autoethnography (whatever this is) and how I should go about doing it.  So far I’ve set guide lines and figured out what I am really trying to get out of doing all of this. I feel ready to start it but last night I realized even if I started my journey today I would have nothing to compare it to. I considered studying myself and my habits with technology and such but I think it be better to take note of my habits before I start so I can know where I stand prior to starting my journey.  

From now until Monday I will be taking note of my habits with technological devices and social networks. I can already tell you just from taking note of what I’ve used this morning, i’m going to have a lot of free time when I start my journey Monday. 

Here’s a glimpse of just my morning habits today:

  • My alarm clock on my phone woke me up.
  • I asked Siri to cut off my alarm clocks (I set various alarms just in case I fall asleep)
  • I asked Siri what the weather was like today and what events I had planned out.
  • Watched YouTube videos while I was getting ready for work.
  • Checked email, Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Instagram, Text Message Updates, Flipboard, Now This News.
  • Listened to my music via Bluetooth.
  • Listened to Pandora and Spotify while doing work at my desk. 
  • Constantly checked and read news feed. 

All of that was in just three hours. 

That is pretty much my daily routine in the morning. Just from looking at that list I can see that I have a ton of distractions while I get ready that cause me to take longer in the morning than necessary. 

On the other side of things, ever since my friends have had my TV and PS3, I’ve really gotten back into reading. And I am very happy about that. I really do love reading and learning new things. I’ve had a ton of books that I’ve been wanting to read for a long time now that I have chosen Netflix over. Netflix is so awesome but man is it a MAJOR distraction. I used to watch a lot of regular TV before I moved, and I still have access to it where I am now but just never really hooked it up to my TV. So Netflix has been dominating my TV. 

Although I have a general idea of what i’m going to do with all my free time once I start my journey, I still have no idea what i’m going to do with myself with all that free time. But growing up in the generation I did, I can safely say that i’ll be alright.

When I was little, as much of my generation can relate to, I did not have a cell phone, the internet, a car, or endless technologies to keep me occupied. Even into my early teens I refused to have a lot of technologies that were coming out at the time, such as an iPod, cell phone, cd player, dvd player, a social network. 

Yeah I know. 

If you know how I am now you would say no way. 

I just didn’t feel like I needed those things at the time. I was still very much golden and wide eyed and bushy tailed. And even if I have lost a bit of my goldeness, I plan on gaining it back and much much more.

Even though I’m doing this autoethnography on my own, I encourage you all to try it. Even if it just for a day. And if you do decided to try it out make sure you take note of your own regular habits prior to starting so you know where you were and how far you have come.
